The Spark Within by Jim Thornton 8/2/2007
By and by I wander, along my earthly path,
The things I do, I know not why, they seldom make me laugh,
My life today is far away from that which I’d have planned,
I hardly know just who I am, I need a helping hand.
To find out who I really am, if all outside was gone,
To find out why I came here, and what should I have done,
To know why life could not have been one happy joyous ride,
To know why I put on this front, and hide the man inside.
All the things I work at, believing they’re the key,
Seem to end up nowhere, step forward, then back three.
All my effort seems to go, on trying to survive,
Although I live, I can’t remember how to feel alive.
So then I just surrender, not knowing where to turn,
And throw my head up to the sky and shout “I need to learn!”
“Teach me please! For god’s sake, before I lose my mind!”
“Teach me how to change things, for me and all mankind.”
And so I’ve come to realise, that, though you feel alone,
All you need to do is ask, and God comes on the phone,
You laugh and say “that’s crazy! This man has lost his mind”
But true it is I tell you, just listen and you’ll find.
That answers come a-plenty, from where you hadn’t thought,
Just watch and wait and listen, and recognise what’s taught,
For if God wants to speak to you, would he just there appear?
Or would he send his message, in ways you’d rather hear?
So let me tell you once again, that ask and you will get,
The answers to your questions, will very soon be met,
In ways that are so subtle, but yet so bold and bright,
Just blink and you may miss it, if not you’ll see the light.
So as this time I listened, and wondered what would come,
A part of me still doubted, and thought that I’d stay numb,
But spirit never fail me, and answers they appear,
Sometimes you must be patient, but just make sure you hear.
The words came calm and wonderful, as if all things he knew,
The words were reassuring, he knew just what to do,
The words had made me realise, that I affect my health,
And all the fences in my way, were put there by myself.
“There is a spark within us all, that sets a fire alight,
That burns for an eternity, and sets your course aright,
If only you will recognise the power you possess,
To do things that are wonderful, and all your fears address.”
“First just know that, though you curse, and feel your spark has gone,
Maybe your spark was always there, but hardly has it shone,
Because it has been buried in fears and lack of trust,
And hidden deep and far away from all that can combust.”
“So set it free I ask you, feel the joy once more,
Allow your spark to take a hold, and see what is in store,
When you believe that you are safe, and that you will survive,
When you believe your own true worth, you start to come alive.”
“And recognise what you can do, when you follow your desires,
And do things that you really want, and see just what transpires,
Don’t do things you feel you should, so others won’t ask why,
Do the things that bring you joy and lift your spirits high.”
“And as your spirit’s lifted, the fire it starts to spread,
You feel good in your body, and it moves up to your head,
And your enthusiasm, which burns so bright today,
Takes a hold in others, and burns to light the way.”
“So what’s that thing inside you, you always thought to do,
Or if you could be someone else, just where and what and who,
For you can be the person, that you want to be,
Nothings really out of bounds, just trust and just believe.”
“For in this world of plenty, there are so many things,
That you can just imagine, can make you dance and sing.
So let them through and don’t deny, the passion and desire,
When you allow your passion, the spark can light the fire.”
“That burns bright and eternal, just like the stars and Sun,
And guides us in our earthly life, to peace and joy and fun.
For we’re creative beings, with joy down deep inside,
So let the spark ignite your fire and just enjoy the ride!”
